Jesse Martin named Kathi Kornas Volunteer of the Year

Every year, BBBSCI is honored to present the Kathi Kornas Volunteer of the Year Award to a member of the community. This award was established in honor and memory of long-time BBBSCI volunteer Kathi Kornas, daughter of supporters Carol and Wayne Kornas, who exhibited a dedication to our mission with enthusiasm, loyalty, and love. This award is given annually to a non-Big, non-Board, BBBSCI volunteer who has gone above and beyond in volunteer service to the agency.

This year, we are pleased to celebrate our 2015 Kathi Kornas Volunteer of the Year Award winner, Jesse Martin. Jesse, the Director of Chemistry, Research Substance, and Immunology IT at Eli Lilly & Co, served as the United Way of Central Indiana’s liaison for Eli Lilly in 2015. He has dedicated much of his time to promoting our mission and raising awareness.

Jesse helped facilitate our first and largest grassroots marketing campaign in October 2015. Because of him, 170 employees from the Lilly IT department distributed 508 yard signs to volunteers, donors, schools, partners, and friends of BBBSCI throughout Central Indiana to raise awareness of mentoring during Go Big for BBBS Month.

He also volunteered throughout National Mentoring Month in January 2016, participated in bi-weekly and monthly planning calls with BBBSCI staff, and donated his time to various BBBSCI fundraisers throughout the year such as Crew for Kids in partnership with Crew Carwash, SummerFest, and a state-wide Big Service Day in partnership with Starbucks. As a result of Jesse’s hard work and dedication, 19 new Bigs from Eli Lilly joined our program – surpassing our original goal of 13. With 39 Eli Lilly employees serving as Bigs in 2015-2016, Eli Lilly is our largest corporate recruitment partner.

“These last couple of years at Lilly were a time of growth and change for me which went right along with my work with you guys. You will always have a special place in my heart! Words can’t express how much I appreciate our time together and the impact we were able to make. I’m looking forward to another great recruiting year from Lilly!” Jesse said.

We were able to surprise Jesse with the award on May 24 at Eli Lilly during a short presentation. We are so grateful for Jesse’s commitment, passion, and dedication to our mission and community. Thank you, Jesse!
