On Sunday, June 26, we celebrated one of our favorite days at BBBSCI, SummerFest! This annual event celebrates successful mentoring relationships with our Bigs, Littles, and their families. This is the fifth year in a row the Marion County Fairgrounds and North American Midway have hosted BBBSCI and our matches.
“(We had) a great day at the Marion County Fairgrounds!” said Big Brother Larry Hammond. Larry attended the fair with his Little Brother Dusty – who he has been matched with for over two years.
To kick off the day, Bigs, Littles and friends sang karaoke and showed off their dance moves. In addition to the entertainment, our matches also enjoyed prizes and games led by groups of volunteers from Eli Lilly & Company and Geico. Guests also spent some time hanging out with the Indianapolis Colts in their “Play 60 Zone,” where they learned about fitness and health.
“Dusty’s (real life) brother, Dylan, also a Little, is a football fan and his big moment was seeing and gaining a signed poster of the Colts Cheerleaders. That was special,” Larry said.
Our matches were also treated to a delicious meal from Jug’s Catering, who has donated lunch for this event for 15 years. Once everyone had their fill of Jug’s famous fried chicken and biscuits, we announced the raffle winners of two bikes. The bikes were donated and assembled by Geico, and the Littles couldn’t have been more excited to ride their new set of wheels! After we announced the winners of the bikes, everyone spent the rest of the afternoon visiting the various attractions and riding the many rides at the fair.
“Dusty and I had two favorite parts of the SummerFest: a great lunch with accompanying karaoke, and secondly – the animal petting zoo. A good day with lots of food, sunshine, and fun!” Larry said.
SummerFest 2016 was made possible by the following sponsors: Jug’s Catering, Marion County Fair, NestleWaters, North American Midway Entertainment, Summer Youth Program Fund and Lilly Endowment, Inc., United Way of Central Indiana, and United Way of Johnson County. We are so grateful for their support of this event for our matches and their families!
