Catching an Indians game. Cheering on The Pacers. Playing in the park. Strawberry picking.
Often times, you don’t need to do a grand gesture to make a huge impact on the people in your life. It’s usually the little things that make a big difference. Caroline Knoth knows this and that is why she loves being a Big Sister.
When Indianapolis native Caroline moved back home after graduating from the University of Dayton in 2014, she decided to volunteer with BBBSCI. During college, Caroline was involved with BBBS at a local elementary school and wanted to stay connected to the mission once she moved home.
“I had two jobs and I needed a volunteer opportunity that allowed flexibility and was not a huge time commitment -which Big Brothers Big Sisters offered,” Caroline said. After going through the application process, Caroline was matched with her Little Sister Estefany in September of 2014. Since then, the two have made lots of great memories together.
“We have done lots of fun things! No matter how big or small the activity is, we always enjoy spending time together. We’re always laughing and even though it may not seem like a big deal, it means so much,” Caroline said.
Caroline and Estefany have participated in lots of different activities as a match: shopping with the Indianapolis Colts, cooking dinner together, visiting a pumpkin patch, attending Pacers games, and hanging out at the park. Most recently, the pair enjoyed the sunshine and summer weather during an afternoon spent strawberry picking. Caroline said she recognizes it’s the little things that make a big difference.
“Knowing that I am doing something so little like spending a few hours a month with someone – which can make such a big impact on another person – means a lot to me. We have been matched for almost two years and I can see a major difference. Estefany is much more open, outgoing, and confident as a whole,” she said. Estefany is always excited to see Caroline and can’t wait to go home and tell her family all about her time spent with her Big Sister. In addition to putting a smile on Estefany’s face, Caroline is also grateful for BBBSCI’s program.
“The beauty of the program is that both the Big and Little benefit. I always look forward to spending time with Estefany. I believe that everyone has the ability to be a mentor. I grew up with many mentors and confidants. It was important to me to be that someone to someone else!” she said.
While these Sisters are always trying out something new and exciting, they also have a special project they’ve been doing together as a physical representation of their match.
“Estefany and I have been working on a scrapbook filled with pictures and memories of things we’ve done together. A few months ago, I looked over and she had titled one page, ‘My Favorite Sis!’ She also had been carrying around (two pictures of us) in her coat pocket. You never realize how big of an impact you might have on someone!”
