Name: Whitney Smith
Title: Director, Corporate Partnerships & Marketing
Start Date: September 2008
I am an alumni Big – Ty’Kenya, my Little, and I graduated from BBBSCI in 2018!
My favorite memory from working at BBBSCI is … It is impossible to think of just one favorite memory when I have loved every single day of working alongside my colleagues, board members, and partners at BBBSCI to support our Bigs and Littles. This memory is not related to working at BBBSCI, but it’s one I’ll always treasure: the car ride with my Little Sister, Ty’Kenya, on the way to the Celebrate Mentoring graduation event in 2018. Ty’Kenya and I were matched together when she was 12 and I was 25, and we grew alongside each other during the eight years we spent as Big and Little. I picked her up from her house and we spent the entire car ride laughing about our favorite memories together. It was then that I truly understood that these mentoring relationships, just like every meaningful relationship in our lives, really are all about the little, seemingly insignificant moments spent baking cupcakes, driving around town talking, enjoying a shake together at Steak and Shake, that lead to the big moments –the driver’s permit, the first job, the graduations, and the celebrations. I am lucky to have known Ty’Kenya through the BBBS program and I’m so proud of the strong, driven, independent young woman she has become.
What I love most about my job is… I have the privilege of sharing stories of our amazing Bigs and Littles and the impact of those relationships with partners and corporations in the community and I’m honored to raise funds for a mission I believe in wholeheartedly and an organization that is truly transformative in the lives of young people.
How has mentoring played a role in your life? I grew up with a supportive and loving family, but at any pivotal point in my life, there have been strong women leaders who challenged me to become the best version of myself, personally and professionally. From my academic professor at Hanover College, Dr. Barbara Garvey, to my first professional mentor, Susan Borquard, I am who I am today because they walked alongside me, sharing their wisdom and cheering me on.
When I’m not at work, you can find me … Speed reading through any book by Harlan Coben or Kristin Hannah, traveling (my favorite spots include Kennebunkport and Hilton Head Island and road trips are always my preferred method of travel!), hosting game nights, and long bike rides on the Monon.
What is your favorite spot(s) in Indy? I’m partial to our partners who are committed to supporting our community in so many ways, including Crew Carwash and Starbucks. And I love exploring our neighborhood via foot or bike – my husband and I have lived in Midtown for almost 11 years and there is always a new local restaurant or shop to explore!
