Big Sister Victoria Glascock and Little Sister Kenadie (pictured above) are one of the BBBSCI matches who are members of our BBBSCI Girl Scout Troop. The Girl Scout troop began in September of 2019 and currently has 4 active matches participating. We recently spoke with them about their experience in the troop and they had great things to share! Read below to hear about their experience:
What would you say is the best part of being in the BBBSCI Girl Scout Troop? Kenadie and I love getting to hangout with other Bigs and Littles around her age. The Troop offers us opportunities that we would not be able to have or have a difficult time doing otherwise, without the troop. Girl Scouts has given us both a chance to engage with other girls who want to make a difference in the community, share experiences, become friends and have fun.
How has the Girl Scout Troop impacted the relationship between you and your Little? Kenadie and I have gotten even closer with Girl Scouts. She leans on me to help her with her badges and activities. With each activity that we accomplish, we are brought closer together. Some of the activities are things that she nor I have ever thought of doing before but are so glad we did!
How has the Girl Scout Troop impacted your Little? Kenadie has gotten to make friends with girls that are outside of her neighborhood and school classroom. I have seen her open up to these girls and take an active interest in their lives. She even asks about them and our Troop Leader, Miss Shelley, when we have days off from Girl Scouts.
What would Kenadie say is her favorite part of the Girl Scout Troop? “I liked getting to decorate and set up our cookie booth. I liked getting to sell cookies with my new friends. I really liked getting to eat the cookies too!” -Kenadie
Would you encourage other matches to get involved and why? I would highly encourage other matches to get involved in Girl Scouts! This partnership has given Kenadie and me a more enriching experience with each other. We get to do so many wonderful activities together with other matches. We share stories about our experiences, exchange ideas on ways to help each other and celebrate what is most important, our Littles!
Big Sister MaryBeth Eiler and Little Sister Zirena (pictured above) are another one of the BBBSCI matches in the Girl Scout Troop. They were excited to share their thoughts and experiences with the troop as well!
What would you say is the best part of being in the BBBSCI Girl Scout Troop? The best part about being in the BBBS Girl Scout Troop has been the engagement with other Bigs and Littles. Connecting with other matches has allowed the Littles to form strong bonds with one another as well as created an opportunity for Bigs to bounce ideas off one another. Our troop meetings are the same week every month, so it’s not only easy to plan for, but it’s given us something to look forward to doing together every month.
How has the Girl Scout Troop impacted the relationship between you and your Little? Girl Scouts has given us the opportunity to learn more about one another. Every time we get together or chat on the phone, Girl Scouts is part of the conversation. Whether it be what we are learning, what is coming up next, or what we hope to do as a troop, it’s opened up more dialogue between us. It’s pretty special that we get to learn and engage together inside and outside of our time together as a troop.
How has the Girl Scout Troop impacted your Little? Being part of the Girl Scout Troop has no doubt been the best activity to engage in with my Little. I have watched her flourish within Girl Scouts. She is a natural leader, and Girl Scouts has given her the opportunity to foster those skills. While that has been a joy of mine to watch, the greater impact for my Little has been the opportunity to develop close friendships with the girls. Having good friends is so important at her age and it’s been a gift for her to find them within Girl Scouts.
What would Zirena say is her favorite part of the Girl Scout Troop? “It’s a great way to connect with girls in your age group! It’s super fun and always an adventure. My favorite part is being able to connect with all the girls and make friends. Some of my favorite activities as a troop have been our indoor campfire, selling Girl Scout Cookies, and our hike at Fort Harrison State Park. I like it all!” – Zirena
Would you encourage other matches to get involved and why? If you are on the fence about joining, I’d encourage you to give it a try! Before joining Girl Scouts, I was hesitant to join due to the commitment, but after being involved for nearly a year, I can confidently say it has been the best decision for our match. Both my Little and I look forward to it each month. Our troop leader is outstanding and is always going above and beyond to make our time together as a troop fun and educational. If you are looking for a way to get your Little involved with peers her age, this is an excellent option!
