Development Director

This role works in partnership with the CEO and Director of Corporate Giving & Marketing to manage development team operations including individual giving, grant applications and reports, event management, and donor relations.

Position Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Manage the agency's development operations - most specifically, individual giving and foundation relations, event and donor campaign management, funder applications and reporting, stewardship and donor relations.
  • Work in partnership with CEO and Director of Corporate Giving & Marketing to coordinate development team priorities, calendar, and work.
  • Set and achieve multi-year and annual development goals, strategies, and tactical plans.
  • Lead annual process for setting revenue goals and building team expense budget.
  • Lead the monitoring of and reporting on development team progress.
  • Personally manage a portfolio of prospective and current individual donors and funders.
  • Develop new revenue potential with consideration for the philanthropic trends, agency endowment, planned gifts, and long-term sustainability and growth.
  • Work in partnership with the CEO to engage and motivate Board of Directors for growth in personal giving and in Board-led giving from their personal networks of potential supporters.
  • Manage and support the efforts of the Board Development Committee.
  • Supervise the ongoing strategy for, implementation, and progress of the following development components according to goals and plans:
    • Annual and major individual giving program
    • Foundation relationship-building, as well as grant proposal and report generation
    • United Way partnerships and compliance requirements
    • Donor engagement and annual agency and third-party event management
    • Solicitation campaigns, e.g. Giving Tuesday
    • Donor stewardship program
    • Data management and donor relations; including policies and procedures, gift entry and acknowledgements, donor data, and prospect research
  • Managing Others:
    • Provide leadership to the department in all areas, including customer service, professionalism, etc.
    • Effectively perform all supervisory functions of hiring, coaching, training, disciplining, and terminating, according to BBBBSCI policies. Develops and holds staff accountable to work efficiently and effectively and to achieve individual and team goals while complying with agency policies and national standards of practice. Ensures effective performance management and completion of annual evaluations for all program staff.
    • Establishes and ensures a system and culture of continuous staff learning, development and succession planning

Position Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required preferably with a nonprofit management, sales, marketing, or philanthropy focus. 4-5 years of experience in fundraising or nonprofit management with proven results. Preferred experience in operations/project management, individual giving, grant writing, data management, event management, and staff management. Ideal candidates possess excellent written and verbal communication; experience or ability in establishing an effective operating system; initiative; drive to achieve results; ability to work under multiple deadlines; poise under pressure; ability to manage and inspire staff and volunteer leaders; and Central Indiana community contacts. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office software and experienced with or able to learn Raiser’s Edge database. Successful candidates will be passionate about the Big Brothers Big Sisters mission, positive, adaptable, team-oriented, proactive, and highly skilled at building strong and enduring relationships.

Match Support Specialist - Johnson County
  • Help ensure new match goal by completing assigned Match Introductions according to BBBSCI standards.
  • Continually assess the match relationship through contacts and surveys with a focus on child safety, match relationship development, positive youth development and volunteer satisfaction. Identify, address, and resolve real and/or potential problems as early as possible.
  • Assess and provide for individual training needs, information and support needs for each match participant to assure a positive youth development experience for the child, and successful and satisfying experience for the volunteer.
  • Ensure accurate database documentation is completed in AIM according to BBBS Standards and Agency policies & procedures.
  • Promote individual and group match activities and encourage the usage of the Big App to support ongoing volunteer involvement with the child and agency affiliation through individualized recognition, annual events, and re-engagement strategies.
  • Conduct exit interview by phone with all parties at match closure. Assess reasons for match closure and re-match potential. When match terminates pre-maturely or unexpectedly refer exit interview to supervisor for third party assessment.
  • Identify and promote re-engagement of volunteers as Bigs, board members, and donors in other volunteer capacities.
  • Share with development, engagement, partnership coordinator and/or marketing staff potential partnership relationships and stories as discovered through match contacts with Big, Little and Parent/Guardian.
  • Establish and promote positive communication among all team members of BBBSCI to increase collaboration and reduce inefficiencies.
  • Represent BBBSCI in a professional manner at all times, providing courteous service to both internal and external constituents and presenting a positive image of BBBSCI.
  • Abide by BBBSCI policies and practices.

Program Communications and Events Specialist


Position Duties include but are not limited to:

  • The Big App: Manage Administration and Maintain and Grow Content
    • Enter current Bigs into the Big App as needed
    • Work with Match Support Specialists to ensure new Bigs are using the Big App
    • Add new content into the Big App on an ongoing basis ensuring variety of indicators and age
    • Maintain sponsorhip recognition
    • Oversee Admin site
    • Work with Chief Program Officer as new agencies are brought into the Big App
  • Program Activities and Events: Assist with/Lead Agency Match Activities
    • Compile content and design for invitations, all program communications and materials, including MT 101
    • Oversee ticket distribution and coordination
    • Create partner recognition
    • Assist and or lead match activities as assigned with a high level of customer service, including: invitation, registration, program materials, and follow up
    • Ensure on-going maintenance and creation of Big App activities
    • Assist with the Discount Partner Program comprised of partners that offer ongoing discounts for matches
  • Program Communications: Promote Agency Brand to all Constituents in Coordination with Brand Communications Manager
    • Help design needed event flyers by inputting text into pre-made flyers
    • Coordinate E-news of Big Bulletin and mailing quarterly Parent Bulletin including: collection of information, creating and drafting content, and distributing newsletters on schedule
    • Manager and update program components of agency website; update Bigs only section and Program partner information, and program events in conjunction with Marketing as needed
    • Lead development of small video pieces that will attract volunteers, steward donors/funders, enhance retention efforts, and/or build awareness
    • Assist in coordination of agency award nominations
    • Assist in development of match stories
    • Assist in streamlining external marketing materials for the Program department
    • Organize files on the J drive for Program staff; ensure proper labeling of photos, stories and files, and purging of out-of-date documents, files or corrupted photos
    • Coordinate all graduate communication and biographies for Celebrate Mentoring event
  • Program Support: Provide Program and Administrative Support to Program Team
    • Provide Program administrative support and work on special projects as needed and approved by the Chief Program Officer
    • Assist with activity and program evaluation
    • Assist with dissemination of program policy updates
    • Assist with Program Board Committee and Task Force Groups
    • Oversee the on-going background check process, ensuring full compliance
    • Attend All-Staff and department meetings as scheduled

  • Enroll and assess potential volunteers, children, and parents/guardians which includes collateral, background checks, references, interviews, and database documentation. The assessment/interview can be conducted in the agency, home or community, and includes but is not limited to safety information, orienting and completing documents needed for enrollment or re-matching purposes, and determining eligibility of all applicants.
  • Maintain customer service at levels exceeding expectations of our volunteers, parents, and children. Provide timely and comprehensive assessments, as well as recommendations for the volunteer and child, to assist in determining best program option.
  • Place volunteers and youth in potential mentoring matches.
  • Engage and work with diverse communities while building an appropriate relationship for matching purposes.
  • Ensure consistent and timely follow through on the completion of all documents and required checks used to determine the volunteer and/or child’s eligibility.
  • Assess and provide for individual training needs, information and support needs for each match participant to assure a positive youth and development experience for the child and successful and satisfying experience for the volunteer.
  • Ensure high-level expertise in applying child safety and risk management knowledge, policies and procedures throughout all aspects of job function. , providing courteous service to both internal and external constituent and presenting a positive image of BBBSCI.
  • Ensure high-level expertise in applying child safety and risk management knowledge, policies and procedures throughout all aspects of job function.
  • Attend required meetings and events as scheduled.
