Sarah Myers named 2017 Big Sister of the Year

facebook_1902872977Indianapolis –Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana announced this week the Big Sister of the Year for their community-based program. The “Big of the Year” award recognizes outstanding volunteers who provide exceptional and life-changing impact to the children they mentor in the Central Indiana area.

Sarah Myers was named the 2017 BBBSCI Big Sister of the Year. She has been matched with her “Little Sister” Elizabeth for over seven years, and the two will officially complete the BBBSCI program in April at the annual Celebrate Mentoring graduation event. Sarah resides on Indianapolis’ north side. She is the Director of Strategic Advancement for the Indiana Youth Institute (IYI). During the time Sarah and Elizabeth have been matched, Sarah has opened Elizabeth to a new world of experiences and as her mentor, Sarah has been able to help her Little Sister become more confident and outgoing.

We are very proud to recognize Sarah with this honor,” Darcey Palmer-Shultz, BBBSCI Chief Executive Officer, shared. “Sarah is a dedicated friend and advocate for both E-beth and our agency. We have loved watching their friendship grow over the years and honored to have been able to connect and support them.”

“Everyone at the Indiana Youth Institute is thrilled that Sarah has been recognized for her role as a Big Sister,”  Tami Silverman, IYI’s president and CEO, added. “While her work with IYI is critical to helping youth-serving organizations improve the well-being of young Hoosiers, her commitment to kids extends beyond the walls of our office. Sarah’s relationship with Elizabeth is an inspiration to us all. Sarah can’t help but smile when she speaks about Elizabeth, and that reaction exemplifies the positive impact mentoring has on both the mentee and the adult mentor.”

“Sarah describes her match as ‘nothing short of incredible’ and something that has ‘exceeded her expectations,’” Marisa Pyatt, BBBSCI Match Support Specialist, said. “That is how we, at BBBSCI, also feel in regard to Sarah’s dedication as a mentor. Sarah emulates the mission and values of BBBSCI and we could not be more proud to not only have her as a strong and devoted volunteer, but also as an advocate for all youth and our organization as a whole. It is for all of these reasons stated that Sarah is an outstanding candidate for Big Sister of the Year.”

Self-confidence is the biggest area of improvement for Elizabeth. As a result of her friendship with Sarah, she has become more determined to not only get by with her school work – but thrive. Sarah’s support of Elizabeth has allowed her to be comfortable with being herself.
