Little Sister Carolyn and Big Sister Robin have been matched together for 6 years. Carolyn is looking forward to graduating from high school this Spring and will be attending the IU Bloomington Kelley School of Business starting in the Fall. Robin and Carolyn are going to miss being a part of this program!
Carolyn is also the recipient of a Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana Be Big Scholarship. This scholarship was made possible through the Strada Education Network Big Potential Award Fund. This scholarship can be used for room/board, textbooks, tuition, and other expenses incurred during their study.
When reflecting back to when Carolyn and Robin were first matched with each other Carolyn shared, “My Big has had a substantial impact on my life. I still vividly remember Prevail suggesting Big Brothers Big Sisters and months later, sitting around my kitchen table, was Robin. Meeting her that first time, I was so nervous, but she kept winking at me and I just knew we were going to have a special relationship. Looking back and comparing who I was then in sixth grade, to who I am now as a senior; a lot has changed. Robin has been with me through it all, and I would not be who I am without her. Having a relationship with her has developed my confidence, my ability to communicate, and my perspective in so many ways. She helped pull me out of my shell, she helped me develop relationships, and she showed me unconditional love. She has stood by my side through family troubles, school troubles, and personal troubles. She has had my best interest in the core of her heart.”
These two have shared countless memories and laughs over the years. As Big Sister Robin was reflecting on their times together she shared, “I found myself enjoying Carolyn’s company and we had long, fun conversations on the way to the many “firsts” for Carolyn – We went to the Indianapolis Zoo, the Indiana State Fair, Holiday World, the Children’s Museum Haunted House, the Indianapolis Symphony, Broadway productions of “Hamilton”, “Wicked”, and “Les Miserables”, Mythbusters Live, Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran, and many other indoor and outdoor concerts, the Indiana State Museum, and pumpkin patches. We often went to the movies and out to eat. One of our first outings was to the Indiana State Fair where we promptly ate a lot of junk food and I was sure her mom would be mad at me, and Carolyn hit a ball too hard on the putt putt course (almost hitting someone with the ball), and then she fell asleep on the way home.”
Finally, Big Sister Robin shared, “Carolyn has become a confident, engaging, strong, focused and delightful young woman. She has friends, a boyfriend, knows how to set boundaries, is focused on school, has a job, and is excited about college and the future. I am very proud of who she has become.”
There is no doubt that these two will remain important friends in each other’s lives for years to come. Good luck in this next chapter of your life, Carolyn!
