Meet Tom & Sin’cere: Match of the Year Honorees

Each year Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Central Indiana honors our “Matches of the Year”. We had 10 matches of the year in 2021, and each of these matches was interviewed for a series of short videos.

We weren’t able to fit everything into the Match of the Year videos, so here’s a deeper look into one of 2021’s strongest matches!

Big Brother Tom and Little Sin’Cere have been matched since November of 2018, and supported all along the way by Sin’Cere’s mom, LaTrice.

Despite some anxiety leading up to the match introduction, Tom and Sin’Cere both feel like they have a perfect match. In our conversation, Tom shared that Sin’Cere is a lot like he was at that age. Neither of them are “big talkers”, so they are both “happy to be talking and are also happy to not be talking.” Tom shared that they have come to really enjoy each other’s company, regardless of what they’re doing.

Still, the two of them share a lot of the same interests and never have trouble finding activities they will both enjoy. The two of them are a staple at BBBSCI’s monthly game nights and they both love technology. In fact, Sin’Cere and a teammate recently won 1st place in a coding competition put on by IUPUI. After sharing about that competition, Tom said, “I’m very proud of Sin’Cere. I feel quite honored that he’s my little brother.”

Sin’Cere waited for around 4 years before being matched with Tom. During that time, he didn’t think about it much, but he would occasionally find himself wondering “maybe today will be today”. Finally, in November of 2018, the two of them were matched. Now they have 3 years’ worth of memories made together.

We asked Sin’Cere to describe Tom and he said, “I would describe Tom a lot like I would describe myself. You just need to get past that wall. The wall might be hard to get through, but once you get through you can see who Tom really is. Tom is a great person. He will always try to help people, he will talk with you when you need it, and he gives good advice.”

Tom said that he probably gets more out of the friendship than Sin’Cere, but Sin’Cere had a lot he was grateful for as well. He shared that he’s always been an introvert and has never liked talking to people. He hid behind his mom for half of the evening when he first met Tom. Over time, he’s grown more confident and outgoing. While still an introvert, Sin’Cere enjoys being with people much more than before.

LaTrice has noticed that growth in Sin’Cere as well. She shared that he’s “more open and talks more.” She doesn’t have to push him to do things, he’s “eager to go out and he does it on his own. He’s ready.”

LaTrice thinks the match is so strong because they “see themselves when they look at each other.” She calls them Batman and Robin because they are so alike (Sin’Cere made a point to say that he’s Batman).

We asked LaTrice to describe Sin’Cere and she said, “His name says a lot. He’s loving, careful, and supportive. He’s loyal. He’s right there for you. He lives up to his name.”
