Little Brother MarShon & Big Brother Alec: 2026 Match of the Year

Little Brother MarShon and Big Brother Alec were matched in July of 2017. Alec says that he was inspired by his mother – a social worker – to give back to others. At the time he signed up to become a Big, Alec felt a lot of frustration with the way of the world and wanted to channel those feelings into something positive.

Alec and MarShon were matched because they shared a lot of common interests like sports, games, and exploring new places. Outside of these similarities, it was believed that Alec would make a great mentor to MarShon in exposing him to new experiences and providing individualized support.

When MarShon and Alec met each other, they made plans for their first outing – a trip to Applebee’s. This outing was MarShon’s idea – believing the restaurant’s ‘2 for $20’ meal would be an affordable option for Alec. This kind consideration and thoughtfulness is something that only grew as MarShon got older. In a letter to MarShon, Alec said, “You were a kind and thoughtful boy who grew into a kind and thoughtful young man of whom I am very proud of.”

Outside of going out to eat, some of their first experiences together included Alec teaching MarShon how to swim and going to see the new Spiderman Homecoming movie. MarShon recalls that one of his favorite memories is when Alec attended his 5th grade graduation. He looks back on this time fondly and says that moments like that meant a lot to him.

Through MarShon and Alec’s 8 ½ year friendship, they’ve spent time attending sporting events, seeing movies, go-karting, playing laser tag, visiting Dave & Busters, playing video games, facing off in basketball, and having countless meals with one another.

When reflecting on the way their friendship has grown and transformed, Marshon said, “We met when I was just 9 – 2 complete strangers meeting for the first time – and just years later he is definitely one of my best friends.”

Through his mentorship, Alec has created a safe space for conversations around serious topics. Together, MarShon and Alec have had discussions surrounding the Black Lives Matter movement, loss, and racial relations in our country.

MarShon feels appreciative of all the ways that Alec has been there for him. Alec has been more than a fun friend to have around – he’s encouraged MarShon to stay motivated and focused on his goals. When thinking about the impact that Alec’s mentorship has had on MarShon, he said, “Having Alec as a Big Brother and mentor is one of the best things that has happened.”

MarShon and Alec will graduate from the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana program in 2026 – when MarShon also graduates from high school. After graduation, MarShon plans to continue pursuing the career path to become an engineer.

When thinking about MarShon’s future, Alec said this in his letter, “I can’t wait to see all the wonderful things you’re going to do as you make your way out into the world. Thank you for giving and teaching me just as much or more as I ever gave or taught you.”

Marshon, when reflecting about his involvement in the program, said, “I really appreciate BBBS for giving us the opportunity to share our journey that is going to continue to go on and grow.”
