“To know that I can be a positive influence in a child’s life is a blessing and something that I feel grateful to be a part of.”

On today’s blog, we hear from Big Sister Angela Osman. She has been matched with her Little Sister Ty since October 2010, and developed a close friendship these past 7+ years. Check out our interview with Angela to learn more about their match!

Question: Why did you decide to be a Big?
Angela Osman: “That’s actually a funny story. I was still in college and living with my parents and their next door neighbors’ older daughter was the Match Specialist for my area but had just got a job with the peace corps and was getting ready to leave to go to Figi. A few of her coworkers were at a going away party that we went to and I chatted with them and they told me I should apply and see what I thought. I needed something to get some volunteer hours and I figured this would be fun. I love kids and interacting with them and figured this would also play to my strengths. At that time I would never have thought I would be matched with my Little for SEVEN YEARS!”

Q: What has been your favorite memory together as a match?
AO: “That’s kind of a hard one. I have quite a few. I think one of the best was when Ty and I went to swim with the dolphins at the Indianapolis Zoo. We both had so much fun and were in such awe of the dolphins. She was like a kid in a candy shop. That was two years ago and she still talks about that to this day.”

Q: What are some of the activities you like to do together?
AO: “We both like to go to movies and eat at interesting restaurants. We make sure to go somewhere different each time we do go out to eat. She and I also have pizza and movie nights. Roller skating is her favorite past time and I have got into going with her as well and I am a much better skater than I was before I met her. Funny thing was that when they called me to ask about being matched with her, was that she had never been roller skating and really wanted go, and now she’s so much better at skating than I will ever be.”

Q: What has been your favorite / the best part about being involved with BBBSCI?
AO: “We both like to go to movies and eat at interesting restaurants. We make sure to go somewhere different each time we do go out to eat. She and I also have pizza and movie nights. Roller skating is her favorite past time and I have got into going with her as well – I am a much better skater now than I was before I met her. Funny thing is – when they called me to ask about being matched with her, they said that she had never been roller skating and really wanted go, and now she’s so much better at skating than I will ever be!”

Q: Ty was a bridesmaid in your wedding. Can you tell us a little more about that?
AO: “The best memory is having her be part of my wedding day with me. I couldn’t think of a better young lady to have as a bridesmaid in my wedding. She is a very important to my family and me, so naturally I wanted to have her involved in an intimate way. It was a great experience having her at the bridal shower, picking out bridesmaid dresses, and doing all the other fun stuff involved with being in a bridal party. The day of the wedding she looked so grown up I cried when I saw her in her dress and all dolled up.”

Q: What would you say to anyone contemplating being a Big?
AO: “Jump in and just have fun! It is a rewarding and very fun experience. To know that I can be a positive influence in a child’s life is a blessing and something that I feel grateful to be a part of.”
