Saturday, July 23 was annual our day trip to Chicago – a favorite activity of our matches and staff made possible by the generosity of Bob Bowen, who provided the charter bus, snacks, and food vouchers. This year’s trip was another great day in the Windy City, packed with lots of fun activities – and we’re already looking forward to next year’s adventure!

Doniesha: “No, I got the best match!”
A unique part of this trip is that Bigs and Littles are given the option to choose which activities they participate in. Some matches chose to visit the Field Museum of Natural History and spent the day learning about dinosaurs, African wildlife, and China’s Terracotta Warriors.
While some matches explored the Field Museum from top to bottom, other Bigs and Littles spent their free time on Navy Pier. This famous Chicago attraction leaves no room for boredom. Our Bigs and Littles rode the Ferris wheel, shopped at Build-A-Bear, and spent time on Lake Michigan in speedboats! Throughout the day, matches spent time hanging out and getting to know other Bigs and Littles. It was a great afternoon, but the fun didn’t stop there.

After choosing their own activities during the day, everyone met back up at U.S. Cellular Field to cheer on the Chicago White Sox against the Detroit Tigers. Thank you to the Commissioner’s Initiative Program of the Chicago White Sox! This program donates tickets for games to non-profits. Despite the fact the 7/23 game wasn’t one of the games in the program’s original schedule, Maggie Marshall and Lauren Pesqueda of the White Sox worked with the Community Relationships Department of the Commissioner’s Initiative program to provide BBBSCI with 55 complimentary tickets. Despite a weather delay and some rainy weather, everyone was able to cheer on the White Sox in their 4-3 victory of the Tigers and enjoy fireworks after the game.
It was a great day, and here’s what our matches had to say about their big day in the Windy City:
“New adventures and fun memories! This was our 1st time in Chicago. We both had a blast!” – Big Sister Hailey Rose & Little Sister Aniya
“Thanks for arranging a day for us to watch the White Sox. It was awesome!” – Big Sister Ketty Brown & Little Sister Johana
“I love MLB Games! The White Sox are a fun team to watch. We even got to see a home run! Thank you for the opportunity.” Big Sister Brandy Henson & Little Sister Kipeira
“The dinosaurs were the best part about the Field Museum! I learned about a woman who discovered a fossil of a T-Rex and named it Sue.” – Little Sister Anijah
“My favorite part of Navy Pier was spending time with [my Big Sister] Yolanda.” – Little Sister Sierra
